I once worked in a tense working environment and believe me, it wasn’t funny at all. My boss made things so difficult for his team, that everyone was almost going bunkers. Everything was so edgy, that we all craved for a less formal environment.
More often than not, all your team is asking for is to ‘let their hair down’.
One important thing to note is that your employee force is directly tied to productivity – the more stressed and displeased employees are, the less productive they’ll be. On the contrary, happy employees mean more work gets done in a healthy, fruitful work environment.
So what are the best ways to boost a casual working environment?

1. Douse the Atmosphere
It is good to have things done in a formal manner, but when the atmosphere becomes too formal, it gets discouraging.
Here is the rule of thumb; Smile, Laugh or even crack jokes with your employees if need be. Some employers feel ‘too important’ to stoop low and mingle with their colleagues. While this isn’t too good, it also leaves your employees with a negative mindset.

2. Allow Casual Dressing
You can set aside a day or even all day of the week for your team to wear casual apparels to work. This is depending on the mode that works for you.
Allowing them dress differently from the normal, will not ‘tie them to the string’ that they can only perform wearing formal apparel. It also tends to reduce the tension while working on projects.
3. Give Timeouts
As the saying goes “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Therefore, it does affect your team when all they do is work, work and work without relaxing.
Make room for them to relax and visit places as a team. This kind of team bonding will make them interact with themselves, and this will give them a sense of refreshment when they are back to work.
4. Listen To Them
Allowing your team air their views matters a lot. Encourage suggestions and implement them. Some people do not give room for suggestions, and when they do, they end up just filing them away. Do not treat their opinions with levity.
Also, listening to them removes the scare that most employees have of approaching their bosses. This way, you may not only be a boss, but also a confidant. People do have problems you know- whether corporate or personal, and having someone to talk to helps a lot.
5. Develop Them
Helping employees find their personal strength is an extra mile you should go in building a good environment. Paying a detailed attention on them on a one on one basis will play out well in creating a casual work environment.
Also, interacting with them would allow you know, as well as monitor the productive and the less productive ones. By doing this, the helpful workshops you introduce to the team would not only equip them, but would also make you more money. After all, you’re in business for the profit, right?
