How to Boost Your Employees’ Self Confidence

How to Boost Your Employees’ Self Confidence

Self confidence is something that many people have to work at to achieve. It can be affected by many aspects of life, including how an individual feels in their place of work. Improving self confidence levels amongst employees of an organisation can be beneficial to that person as well as the organisation as a whole. Here are some tips for allowing self confidence to flourish in your workplace.

Why is workplace self-confidence important?

If an employee doesn’t feel confident in their place of work, then it can impact on themselves and the organisation in a number of ways. For starters, not feeling sure about what you are doing can lower productivity levels and result in workers not performing at their best or optimum levels. Reduced confidence in your abilities to complete a task may encourage you not to do it or to take longer trying to do it than normal. Lack of self-confidence can affect morale, communication levels, trust and staff retention.

With such detrimental consequences for an organisation, low self confidence amongst staff should be an issue that merits high priority. The really positive thing is that there are loads of initiatives an organisation can take to help boost an employee’s self confidence, and many of these don’t cost the organisation anything!

Know your workers

Uncertainty in how a job should be done or what is expected of an individual affects self confidence, so the first thing any manager should do is to ensure that every single member of staff is fully aware of their job role and the expectations of it. A manager should sit down with staff and get to know how they are progressing, what elements of the job could be done better, if there are any resources lacking to help them achieve their tasks and any concerns they have.

Helping to ensure that staff are making the most of their skills and abilities can boost self confidence and morale, which can in turn increase productivity. Appropriate training should be given to those who require it, in order to get self confidence levels on track.

Give praise

All too often, managers are great at dishing out negative feedback when a worker slips up in some way, and although it’s important to know when mistakes have been made so they don’t happen again, critical comments can greatly affect an employee’s self-confidence. If a worker does make an error, there should be a support system in place to recognise why this happened – could it be elements beyond their control, such as inadequate resources to do the job, for instance? Offering support and encouragement can help to rectify any self doubt issues in workers after they have made a mistake.

On the other side of the coin, many managers don’t do enough to ensure that they give positive feedback to workers when they do something well. A simple thank you, well done or token of acknowledgement and appreciation can send an employee’s self confidence levels soaring – which is great for the business.

Involve your staff

As well as feeling appreciated, staff like to feel that their opinions are worthwhile and recognised, so take on board their ideas and views about the company, and make them feel involved. Allowing workers to become involved in key decisions within the organisation can help boost their self confidence levels and feel that they matter, as well as establishing their support for the organisation.
