Keep active

Looking after your mental and physical health at work can be challenge but will help reduce the risk of developing a work-related illness. When it comes to working, many of us are forced to sit down for hours on end. A recent study has shown that sitting for prolonged periods of time may shorten your lifespan-even if you do the recommended amount of daily exercise. It’s important to try and break up your sitting time throughout the day to prevent problems occurring. If you can, try standing every time you make a phone call or answer the phone and speak to a colleague face to face rather than sending an email.  When you are sat at your desk, make sure you sit properly. Keep your feet flat on the floor and avoid crossing your legs. Ensure your monitor sits at eye levels and use your whole arm, not sure your wrist to type and use the mouse.

Take a break

Even five minute long breaks are an effective way to break up your working day. Taking a quick break helps to boost creativity and refreshed you attention span so you can sustain concentration for longer and get more work done than staring into your computer screen. The average attention span for an adult can range between 15 to 40 minutes so if you feel yourself slacking, get up and walk away for a couple of minutes. Ask for help

Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of confidence. It’s important to know when to ask for help in the workplace, no matter whether you are at school, a college or university student or have stepped foot into an office, if you are confused or require a little extra support you should ask for help. As much as we’d like to be, we’re not super humans. Accepting help doesn’t undermine your independence; it helps it in the long run.

Eat well

In order for your body to function properly, your body needs a mixture of nutrients to stay healthy. A diet that is good for your physical health is also one that is good for your mental health. Although it’s hard to ignore the 3 o’clock afternoon slump, switch the cake and tea and a cold glass of water and selection of nuts. Nuts are packed of a number of nutrients and are loaded with antioxidants to maintain your metabolic rate. They can also help lower cholesterol and promote weight loss -so put that digestive biscuit down!
